Dr. Octagon - 'Aliens'

Extraterrestrial hip hop? Well it isn’t world music, but it’s certainly different…

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

This almost tongue-in-cheek urban groove is a test to our very ears, stretching the relevant criteria it takes for a release to be reviewed in glorious Fly-o-vision. However, it isn’t your stereotypical mainstream hip hop take and maybe that’s why it makes the grade and invades our homelands with ray guns in hand and accompanied by a hovering, jet-powered turntable. Etcetera.

With fear of including any further and obvious analogies of UFOs, tiny green men and Steven Spielberg’s hairy chin, let’s say that this single definitely has its moments and is unlikely to be flat out compared to another artist’s work, which is always a good thing.

The swaggering mechanised beat makes you sway, a jazzy sax is ripped and sampled quite well and the eerie sounds of a keyboard replicating that of a Theremin (think ‘Good Vibrations’) haunt the entire track, spelling out the subject matter in big neon green letters. And just when it seems like there’s nothing left to offer, the tempo is notched up and give it a somewhat Russian feel to the song, as crazy as this sounds.

As for the versions to follow, the first B-side (an instrumental) is pretty pointless and by all means an industry standard. Maybe ideal if you want to blast out a bit of Kraken Karaoke and add a little twist to this Alien Saga.

The final take — a trance-out remix — hits you with a jungle, paranoid trip-rhythm that is enough for you to feel like your headphones have been laced with speed. Confusion is the foremost feeling that prevails. The same lyrical monologue of a spoof military aircraft reporting an ‘orange beam’ and abduction whilst checking the radars and hi-tech gear keeps it all in check, but sadly has all the typical traits of a remix. It’s speeded up, with more samples, more effects and fewer vocal leads — i.e. pointless… A bit like the Prodigy trapped in a timeless void.

‘What am I gonna do when the aliens get here?’ Not sure! Rap about it and scare them back to the dimension from whence they came with predictable storylines?
