Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Having said that, he played the same track both times. ‘A Pimps Dream’ is one of 15 tunes on the new album that is released this week. This track comes at the start of the album that is a story of sorts. Some kinda of story, I suppose. The album comes with ‘interludes’ in the way of a concept album including telephone calls which, as a story telling tool, has been overworked by now. However, he manages to slip it into a broken cut-up on ‘Caught Up’, which is too short and could be developed. And talking of use of the recording of phone calls in songs, you can’t really compare Detroit’s finest with Southampton’s Craig David, but they’ve both brought out albums within a month of each other after long waits. Sticking with the ‘story’ theme, which is perhaps what Mr. Peterson is talking about, Craig’s album is called The Story Goes…; both have the elipsis ‘…’ thing. David, some 6 years on from ‘Re-e-wind’ is concentrating on how to keep in a relationship. Some Kinda… finds Dwele cheatin’ on his girlfriend during ‘Flapjacks’ which isn’t nice but it’s one of the better tunes. Given the choice between Dwele’s version of nu-soul and Mr David, Dwele would be my choice every time. Guests, apart from Slum Village, are not household names and are restricted to a mere four tracks. So Dwele is the star and he’s produced a mixture of old style R&B and jazz (especially where the horns are concerned) in which the love songs shine, such as ‘Lay It Down’ and ‘My Lova’. The criticism would be that its stuck in mid-temp mode and there’s no stand out track (especially for a single, albeit they’ve picked ‘I Think I Love You’ — currently without a video on his home page). But, talking of stand out tracks and the combination of Dwele and Roy, what’s the betting that their Gilles Peterson session version of ‘Red Clay’ (originally by Freddie Hubbard, CTI) will be on the Worldwide Sessions release later this month [it is in fact, Ed]? Guaranteed it’d say as Peterson is meeting up with Dwele and countless others in New York next week (see below). ‘Red Clay’ was the tune of my summer of 2003 as it was never far from the Sony Walkman cassette player in the sun on the beach (it seems so long ago in those pre-MP3 days). In fact, the title track has a little of ‘Red Clay’ in the intro. We loved ‘Affinity’ off the last album and I like this album the more I listen to it. If the pennies are tight, Hectic recommends saving them to buy the Peterson’s compilation. Otherwise, if you’re lucky enough to be in a relationship where you can groove to soulful melodies, Some Kinda… is what you’ve been waiting for. Other than that, get in quick and enter Gilles’ competition this week as it’s in the prize bundle, nice one. Reviewed: Dwele - ‘Some Kinda…’ (Virgin) Cat.
