Guilty Simpson - 'Get Riches' |

|
You’ll recall from our interview with Stones Throw’s bossman, Peanut Butter Wolf, Guilty (aka Byron) Simpson was J Dilla’s favourite MC and that an album was on its way. ‘Get Riches’ is produced by Mr. Porter (aka Denaun Porter, aka Kon Artis of D12) and the b-side is a Madlib joint, ‘She Won’t Stay At Home’. Dave Stelfox (Wire, January 2008) suggests ‘Get Riches’ is reminiscent of Pharoah Monch’s ‘Simon Says’, so as old-skool, we’re not going out on a limb here. That said, ‘Riches’ transforms to ‘Bitches’ on the dirty version and it’s such a heavy beat! Lightened by the Police siren, Coolio strings and the tinkering of a piano, it’s a grower and a good choice for a single. ‘She Won’t Stay At Home’ utilises a sample of a soul track that you’d have heard on the Radio back in the day and finds Guilty bemoaning what sounds like an episode of Moray/Kyle/Springer et al. I bet Malcolm Catto knows what that soul track Madlib has used, (and don’t forget The Heliocentrics album, Out There). It definitely looks like Ode To The Ghetto has a theme to it and while we await that, the single has some good alternative versions; especially the instrumentals. Shame these tracks are not longer though. Reviewed: Guilty Simpson — Get Riches (Stones Throw Records) Release date: December 2007 Links: |
