Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. After the enchanting opener ‘Pioneer To The Falls’, ‘No I In Threesome’ begins with a jarring riff then as the awesome drum rhythm is established it steams into marvellous motion with Paul Banks wittily pondering how to give “something new a try”. Sharing a similar structure to Antics, it is a mixture of a few epic 5-minute or longer journeying songs, then 3-4 minute radio-friendly pumpers particularly ‘Who Do You Think?’, ‘The Scale’, and ‘All Fired Up’. These are songs to sing along to, but without feeling like a chump. Banks’ lyrics are poetic, insightful and amusing, with my current favourite quote “you women you have no self control,” in the stunning ‘Pace Is The Trick’. These are songs to sing along to, but without feeling like a chump… engaging music full of stunning harmonies. Bassist Carlos D and drummer Sam Fogarino are such fine groove merchants Our Love To Admire is jam-packed with moments which fuel head-nodding and vigorous feet stamping, making me want to dance like Ian Curtis! Adding further to the excellent layers is delectable guitar from Daniel Kessler. His chord progressions and timings are wonderful, best shown in ‘Rest My Chemistry’ or ‘Lighthouse’, the later continues the band’s habit of concluding an album on a sombre, intensive note. The move from independent label Matador to the giant Capitol has not diluted the band’s quality. Their major strength remains in the ability of all four members to combine their talents, creating engaging music full of stunning harmonies, with tracks crafted exquisitely raising the band far above mediocre pop/rock acts and into the realm of Joy Division (and New Order), The Smiths and even The Velvet Underground. Some moments seem a tad over familiar to melodies from past material such as ‘No I In Threesome’ & ‘Not Even Jail’, though credit to the band if this is a deliberate homage as it has encouraged me to revisit their previous releases. Also, as yet no track has moved me as much as ‘Say Hello To The Angels’ or ‘Narc’. These are minor points and do not detract from Our Love To Admire’s excellence. Available now with fancy-Dan packaging around the deluxe edition CD plus ‘The Heinrich Maneuver’ as a single, Interpol are on a mammoth world tour, I shall be looking out for them in London come November.
