Joe Driscoll - Origin Myths |

Brooklyn-born Jo Driscoll does all of the above to create his nerd hip hop (think Ugly Duckling) with reggae guitar riffs, stoner lyrics Origin Myth takes the concept of album as autobiography. The title track kicks off with his schooldays, working up through early dead end jobs in a dead end society in ‘Grass Will Overcome’ with its festival-rousing refrain of ‘We don’t work for minimum wage’ and ‘Just Us’ a homage to Bob Marley, which starts off all nu-folk and heads into reggae-fuelled hip hop. On the flip side is a DVD of live performance, an introduction to Driscoll and a documentary about stereotypes of hip hop. Well worth checking out is the Local Principles track ‘Monday Morning’ on Driscoll’s MySpace page — worth it just for The Big Lebowski sample. Joe Driscoll will make you want to dance, attempt to beatbox, buy yourself a loop sampler and lay your soul on the table. Get it. Origin Myths is out now on Buttercut Records. Joe Driscoll plays Ginglik on 3 December, Nottingham’s The Muse on 8 December and Syracuse Xmas at The Palace on 29 December. |

COMMENTS Actually, Joe Driscoll is from Syracuse, NY. He grew up there, and if you’ve listened to the album there are plenty of references to Syracuse in there, and “Grass will Overcome” is all about the mall in Syracuse. |
