Kaki King - Dreaming of Revenge

If revenge was on Kaki King’s mind as she wrote and recorded her latest album it’s a slow burning revenge of which little shows on the surface.

There’s a nu-metal feel about the opening track to Dreaming of Revenge, ‘Bone chaos in the castle’, something a bit Incubus, a little bit clever for its own good, with a tight stop-start rolling drumbeat and some low key electronica driving it along, and that thread continues throughout.

But it’s the delicate fingerpicked ‘Life being what it is’ that pulls you into Kaki King’s world. King’s instrumentals play a little like Tunng, especially ‘Sad American’, all 1960s brought into the noughties and given a makeover, and she certainly has the sound of nu-folk up there with the best of Americana and the British folk scene at the moment. The gradual build up to the wall of sound choruses in some of the numbers stray from the folk into almost latterday indie Coldplay territory, and it’s the blend of the expected and unexpected in these tracks that keeps the interest levels high. There are subtle homages to a whole host of indie and 60s rock classics hidden among the floating folk metal guitar tracks.

It’s the ‘what’s round the next corner’ angle that makes this a step ahead of many of this year’s releases, that and the sparseness of some beautiful breathy vocals among some pretty stunning, if on the whole laid back, instrumental tracks.

Guitarist and singer-songwriter Kaki King is on her fourth album with Dreaming of Revenge, but if you are coming to her fresh on her latest you’ll know you’re in the right place and she’s augmented by the sonic landscapes of Malcom Burn.

Dreaming of Revenge is released on 30 June on Cooking Vinyl.
