Kendall Leonard - The Kendall Leonard Project

With an encouraging image, and cool unfussy photography on the cover of Leonard's debut album, it all smacked of a groovy jazz outfit that didn't have to try too hard. But one should never judge a book (or CD) by its cover...

Kendall Leonard

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

The Kendall Leonard project is along the lines of Alexander O'Neal, polished, tuneful, cleanly produced and positively twinkling with sometimes unnecessary detail. (Such as fake synthesiser brass sections. Yikes!) This is an all round rather dated sound, but it nevertheless has its place.

Back in the Day is a track that Leonard is obviously rather pleased with, (in the sleevenotes we are instructed to 'check out Back in the Day, and see if you agree with the message.' Righto.) I'm not sure about Back in the Day, but I felt a bit like I was back in the elevator, which is where this track wouldn't be out of place. And the message passed me by. I'm clearly not deep enough, unlike Kendall, whose fabulously pretentious sleeve notes announce that the album is (don't laugh,) 'but a mere sampling of the vibrations of the universe as viewed through the eyes of musical genius Kendall Leonard, whose life experience is as vast as the imagination, as complex as creation and as mystical as the abyss.' Blimey. The chap's obviously been through it. But all that experience hasn't taught him much in the way of modesty, has it? Musical genius? Hmm...

Love is a Remedy is a queasy slow dance, meticulously produced with sweeping orchestration (with a little help from his synthesiser friend,) and it's sung in the role of a sort of 'Lurve' doctor with smarmy, toecurling lyrics. Bucket please...

It's hard to believe that this album was conceived in 2004, as it sounds like something that's oozed its way straight out of 1985. (Think Cosby Show.)

Visions of You and Lamentations, although both accomplished tracks, are laden with fake sax, although to be fair they're well executed and wouldn't sound out of place on Jazz FM.

Kendall goes back to his roots with Ibo, which is all a bit predictable, but not bad if you appreciate that sort of thing. The man has an appealing, consistently good voice, but 'musical genius' he most certainly ain't.

But one last quote from those sleevenotes, (sorry, but they're very amusing),'Thankyou to Israel Johnson for his vision, belief and unbelievable ears.' What?! Are they inconceivably huge? Or pointed? Does he have more than one pair? Also, why is he thanking said ears? Maybe he propped his sheet music up on them, who knows? The mind boggles. If anyone has any pictures of these spectacular ears, please come forward.

In conclusion, you may fall for the smooth charms of The Kendall Leonard Project, you may not, but those sleevenotes kept me entertained for days...
