Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Britt has used the opportunity to explore the voodoo rhythms and jazz heritage of Sister G’s native New Orleans and the spiritual themes that lay at the heart of her music. The album is awash with slide guitar, organ and harmonica and is suffused with touches of gospel, funk and soul. Best of all though is Sister G’s remarkable voice — worldly, rich and bluesy. Personal favourites include the insistent, guitar-drenched groove of ‘Power’ and the sensitive acoustic arrangement of ‘Precious Lord Lead Me On’. ‘New World In My View’ is another stunning piece based around a simple piano motif, atmospheric keyboards and ghostly ‘amen’s, coming on like a close cousin of Britt’s classic remix of Soul Dhamma’s ‘Flower’. Occasionally, the music loses focus and begins to drift into Moby-esque territory and the project could have provided a few more surprises if Britt had allowed himself to be more free with his treatment of Sister G’s original recordings. But minor gripes aside, this is yet another strong release from Britt on which he continues to explore new ways of creating the future from the past and ensures that Sister Gertrude’s message of hope and inspiration lives on. |
