Following on from the debut album 89, Kotchy (aka Joerael Elliott) has got a 12” out with a host of remixes. Leading the way is Hrdvsion (aka Nathan Jonson and pronounced “Hardvision”) on ‘A Superstar’. If you know him as Starting Teeth, you know that this guy is as much a maverick as Kotchy as he fuses experimental music, techno, IDM, dubstep to creating something dance friendly, yet “still really strange and kind of disturbing”. He doesn’t let us down here and look out for his work on Wagon Repair (they of Mathew Jonson, Cobblestone Jazz, Deadbeat et al) and I Continue In The Nude on Creaked Records. A Superstar of musical pain. No to be outdone on the catchy ‘Check Out My Keychain’, The Chap (of Lo Recordings fame) strip it down into a bit of minimal glitch synth pop that features the guitar riff of the original. I’d take the leftfield reggae of the original but for some warped club action Débruit (Xavier Thomas) knows how to get the crowd to get jumping. And then to show how talented he is, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist slips in ‘Holla’ and ‘Party Your Blues Away’ (featuring Benni E) neither of which are on the album 89. If you’re into Jamie Liddell, Mocky, Sa Ra Creative, N.E.R.D. and Prince, check this guy out. A madman, A superstar! Reviewed: Kotchy - I’d Have To Be High EP (Civil Music) Cat.
