Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Malcolm Felder began composing as Lineland in 1998, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Felder’s world of ambient, folk, IDM, beats electronica falls somewhere between Quiet Villages’ Silent Movie and the Future Loop Foundations, Daedelus and Dublab whilst sounding nothing like any of them. It’s the folksy ambient soundscapes that are similar; particularly ‘Northside’ and the Merry Christmas Mr Lawerencesque ‘Pleats & Snaps’. The title track has a touch of an instrumental minimal version of Japan’s ‘Ghosts’; electronic mix for the beat generation? ‘Emerald Board’ is similar and a bit quicker than the rest but without getting really near a dance pace (that one sounds a little bit Daedelus’ monome like). ‘The Move Down’ is the experimental warped one for the IDM mixtape and a clever mix of acoustic guitar and bleeps and clicks. ‘Tinsel Spots’ similarly uses the acoustic guitar and adds live drums, sweeping synth strings and evening crickets (definitely in the Future Loop Foundation area), even finishing off with a spaceship playing ping pong!. This album is the follow up to his 2003 debut Pavilion, also released on Audio Dregs (although he runs his own record label, Mutable Sound with Gabe Boyer). The new album has quite a few highlights so it’s time to show some love for logos and support Lineland; far more than the one-dimensional world from which he takes his name.
