Madagascar - Forced March

Listening to Madagascar is like being chased through Johnson’s Bartholomew Fair, by the grotesques and the sinister butchers of the carnival, and finding yourself in a place where the rules don’t exactly fit anymore.

Madagascar - Forced March

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Forced March is the first release by Madagascar, formed in Baltimore MD in 2002 by brothers Michael (accordion, ukulele, glockenspiel with The Big Huge) and Anthony Lambright (of The Mountains, Cass McCooms and Burd Early), along with Justin Lucas (contributor also to noise collective The Roman Empire).

The first track starts at dirge pace, an accordion and musical saw are joined gradually by bass and guitar, and some haunting wordless voices, and is followed by surreal waltzes which are hypnotically alluring.

The sound quality is particularly pure, and the live feel is augmented by the recording being mostly from room mics and recorded straight to 2” tape.

The blend of chamber music, Yiddish folk and gypsy laments lends itself well for film soundtracks, and it comes as no surprise to learn Madagascar has been asked to write the score for the forthcoming remake of German expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.
