Mocky - 'Extended Vacation' |
|||||||
|
Mocky is the name that Toronto born Dominic Salote uses for his musical expressions of popular music. He moved to Berlin sometime ago and seems to be having a great time by the sounds of ‘Extended Vacation’. This is so catchy it’s likely to be picked up by Annie Mac (the new Friday night face of Radio 1). No matter how radio-friendly the original version is, whoever it was that picked out the remix needs to be rewarded with a long weekend away at least. Visit the new video site for Fly and watch the Mocky feat. Feist video ‘Fightin’ Away The Tears’ Eric D. Clark (via California-Paris-Berlin) gets Giorgio Moroder-like on this nine minute 4/4 disco funkathon. The bass has put Nile Rogers in the dungeon, it’s so deep (not literally of course). This is possibly the longest postcard ever, spun out towards the end by a wave-soaked spoken rap. Matt Edwards (as Radio Slave) has a reputation as “remixer to the stars and dance music’s man of the moment.” On this trip, he’s packed the air horn as if they were going to watch the final of the Speedway World Cup in Poland. His nine minutes is really minimal compared to Clark’s version. The strings have gone, as “life’s so short”. Unwind to those throbbing synths but the most minimal is yet to come when Edwards puts his REKID hat on. Following on from his excellent Soul-Jazz album Made In Menorca, REKID is still in a holiday mood of sorts. His remix might wake you up with the dawn chorus but you’re not off to a sunny beach. Even more minimal than the Radio Slave mix, it’s clearly been influenced in an electro-chill fashion but it’s more dub than anything else, like label mate Sandoz. By far the most hypnotic version of the four versions, even if the air horn remains. Suggest you go straight back to the original version for an immediate change in tempo and mood that gets you all happy again. Mocky is helping out with various luminaries at the moment such as, Jamie Lidell, Jane Birkin(!), Gonzales and Fiest so you might wonder if there’s any time for a solo career, never mind a holiday. Check the website for other tracks off the album, Navy Brown Blues and book your reservations (copies) now for this the 12”.
