Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. As it turned out, it wasn’t every Monday as there was a salsa session going on at the advertised venue. Undeterred, back at the record shop Beatnik (highly recommended) I couldn’t resist the classic Scientist-esque cover of Mossman Meets Vander. To call Mossman the Canadian Lee Scratch Perry is over-loading the Ark even if he does use the same model of mixing console as the great one. Ignoring the ‘if it ain’t from JA it ain’t reggae’ school of thought, there’s much to appreciate on this CD — especially if you are a fan of the Jah Wobble influence. I particularly like the opener called ‘Dub Remote’ featuring Vander’s bass and the violin of Catherine Ledoux. Vander also adds some vocals to some of the tracks like ‘Poule Sans Tete’ which, although sung in French, is very reminiscent of the much missed Dubheart with the trumpet of Monsieur Charles. In fact, ‘Wiggling’ and ‘Dub Without Chicken’ could easily have been a classic Dubheart tunes. I’ve always had a soft spot for French language ‘reggae’ tracks and as Montreal is about half way between Paris and Kingston, what better place to be seen? ‘Pourquoi La Vérité?’ is particularly good but on the opposite side, ‘It’s All About You’ can be skipped sharpish. Catherine makes a reappearance on the semi-Balkan, ‘Eastern Dub’ and the ‘world’ theme is aided further the ‘Spanish’ guitar on’Elehantasmogoria’. I was surprised to find out later that this CD has been out for a couple of years but I’ll be looking out for more of Mossman’s productions as the proper dubby ones get the top ratings like ‘Freedom Fries Connection’, ‘Funky N.A.S.A’ and ‘Dub Without Chicken’ (respect the Best Dressed one Dr. Alimantado).
