Puerto Muerto - Songs of Muerto Country

Written as a ‘lost’ soundtrack to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puerto Muerto’s evocative and sparse arrangements on Songs of Muerto Country are as menacing and disturbed as Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic American horror flick, while thankfully managing to avoid the cacophonic screeches and cymbals clashes that graced the film.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

What lies behind the filmic overtones of the album though is a subtle and beautiful sounding record to be engulfed in or swept away by, whichever metaphor you prefer. The sensuous intimacy of Muerto Country brings to mind the best of Tom Waits in all his disquieting glory and Puerto Muerto duo Tim Kelley and Christa Meyer play off each other like two fractured narratives running side by side (damn, back to those film references again).

Songs of Muerto Country pays homage to the great American disturbed dream, as dreamed by David Lynch, Sergio Leone, stretching back to the like of Robert Aldrich and the 1940s noir filmmakers, and should the copyright holders to Texas Chainsaw Massacre object to the film being re-soundtracked, I’m sure Tarantino would be first in line to jump on this for a film score.

I love this record for its alternating dispassionate folk and raucous rock ‘n roll, and although I would like to pull up some standout tracks, like any good film soundtrack it works best as a whole, and this one would be best enjoyed with eyes closed, feet up on the stoop, hands resting on a sawn-off and the screams of your latest victim still ringing in your ears.

Songs from Muerto Country is out now on Fire Records, www.firerecords.com, and Puerto Muerto will be appearing at The Barbican as part of a film series in March 2006 and will be taking a short tour in the UK - go see them, get scared, have nightmares - great.
