Once you’ve got your head around a duo calling themselves The Lone Wolf (erm..still not sure about that one), MC Sum and producer Belief have gone back to downtempo hip-hop consiousness on this nine track ablum. Stand out tracks is the bluesy jazz of ‘Rivers’ and the dusty bowl guitar pickin’ ‘Breakfast On The Moon’; what a great idea having breakfast on the moon is. Carlos NiƱo’s “pyschedelic cosmic love from California” are covered by ‘35 Cents’ and ‘Kakalak All-Stars’. And on your more standard soul-funk tip. “peace” vibes of ‘Next September’ which is when this album is planned to drop! The track ‘The Lone Wolf’ is particularly jazzy al a Alice Coltrane/Pharoah Sanders vibe and is automatic mixtape choice material. Belief was at the same High School as fellow underground hip-hop Living Legends Eligh and Murs (Not only Liveing Legends but also of 3MG and Mum’s the Word’s Constant Evolution but you “you can’t please everybody, can you? you can’t rub everybodies back” (taken from the closing track, ”Sweet Potato Pie’ with a harp break towards the end adding to that blues spirit running through the album). Getting back to names, it was said of Belief’s 2006 album, “if you call yourself Belief, your own label Worker B Records and your debut Dedication” one thing you haven’t got in buckets is self-doubt. The Lone Wolf seem to be ploughing their own hip-hop path and with Sum and Belief having faith in each other, perhaps they’ve both found the sound that fits them like a glove; it fits for me and let’s hope it does for them.
