V/A - MKL Presents Suits & Dahikis

What a great compilation this is lovingly put together by MKL and featuring one of the best Fat Freddy’s Drop remixes you will find.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

In fact, it was the 3 Generations Walking remix of Fat Freddy’s Drop classic ‘Hope’ on a 10” of a few years ago that got me looking out for anything by them. And this mix compilation is literally full of them. As far as I can make out, there is only one of the eleven tracks not directly linked to either MKL, Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) or 3 Generations Walking.

The week I met Zane Lowe, he played Fat Freddy’s Drop’s latest single, ‘Cay’s Crays’ a couple of times on his Radio 1 show. I must say, I was disappointed in the One Self remix of it and they could have done better going back to MKL/Soy Sos who also did their own ‘Hope’ remix on the reverse of the 10”. Hopefully Aaron Jerome will come out with a belter when he gets to remix a FFD track (as yet unknown).

On the subject of remixes, the Tom & Joyce ‘Like Ours’ remix originally came out a few years ago on Bob Sinclar’s Yellow Productions label. While Mr. Sinclar gets some stick for his ‘commercial’ approach, like the Africanism series, he has probably introduced many fans to ‘real’ global music. I think people could give him a little more credit when he supports artists like Tom & Joyce.

That’s enough ranting and name-dropping, what’s the rest of the CD like? It’s a compilation on a soulful house base with variations of different styles be it dub, reggae, jazz, ethnic or even boogie. The ‘Lion1’ mix of ‘Dub Side Influence’ is all about the drums and afro-beat keys and it’s great. In fact, the four tracks by 3 Generations Walking are my highlights, love ‘Looking East’ mix and the cello on their ‘Nothing Or No One’ and jazzy guitar riff on the 4/4! But then again, it’s not really an album to pick tracks out as it’s superb all the way through.

One more name drop then, the album ends with a Francois Keveorkian Dub that is so Fat Freddy’s Drop, it is brilliant.

It’s a great summer outing and a particularly good one to dance to with a smile on your face. Not only that, but also some great cover artwork. Apparently, Michael Kenneth Lopez, has a DJ resendenyc in New York; I hope its listed on the New York Version of ‘The Other Side’.
