V/A - Secondhand Sureshots (DVD + CD)

Those of you that keep an eye on Stone Thow Records web site will know all about this project already but definitely worth catching up with what Dublab regulars can produce with a 100 old records at a mere $1 each.

For all accountants out there, I bet your thinking “that’s a hell of a mark up” (I purchased my copy from for £9.99 as it’s just seems to have this side of the pond after coming out late last year). But it’s real VFM especially as Stone Throw’s Christmas present to the world was a special J.Rocc mix that he’d put together that was great fun to ‘stop the tune’ to over the festive period.

The CD that comes with the DVD is more in the hip-hop beat instrumental, downtempo, experimental, ambient mould. Ras G’s first beat is a curious mix of Hare Krishna nyabingi jazz and Daedelus (as last seen on his Righteous Fists Of Harmony EP) is still in fighting mood whilst Nobody goes quite the opposite way with some piano chill.

The ‘Daedelus Extra Extra Remix’ really crams it all in but the highlight is the Bonus Beat Megamix by Kutmah; who’d have thought a warped Steely Dan mash up with “Cold As Ice” could sound so John Barry? It’s like spinning windmills in your mind.

I’ve not seen the DVD at the time of writing but the place to be this Sunday (9th May) is at The CAMP in London. Not only are they showing Secondhand Sureshots but also the Dilla tribute by Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Suite For Ma Dukes (see our Carlos Niño interview HERE). Tickets are strictly limited (see details below) but at only £5 with the bonus of DJ sets on the night by the incredible Eric Lau (Ubiquity/Tomorroww) and Alex Chase of One Handed (home to the Paul White who is ‘our’ Secondhand Sureshot - really recommend his The Strange Dreams Of Paul White and the latest single, ‘My Guitar Whales’).

The only thing that throws me, can you really buy MC5’s Kick Out The Jams for a $1.00 at Out Of The Closet?

www.soundsoftheuniverse.com/ the limited edition deluxe vinyl of Secondhand Sureshots literally flew off of our shelves Dublab & Stones Throw have finally released the CD and DVD version! Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark “frosty” McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material.
