V/A - Wild Style - 25th Anniversary Edition

The original Wild Style comes in at No 1 in Peter Shapiro’s The Twenty Best Hip Hop Albums Ever Made. You know that the author of The Rough Guide To Hip Hop knows what he’s talking about and so now is a good time to get it as the album gets re-issued on its 25th Anniversary

Wildstyle

The soundtrack to the original movie released in 1983 filmed at the time of the birth of hip hop in the South Bronx with Grand Wizard Theodore on the decks and graffiti on the walls, subways, trains, everywhere.

The film is also being re-released and director Charlie Ahearn is to bring out a book.

And who said the kids of today weren’t interested in learning History? Of course they are. I’m sure they have a real good laff at the monthly ‘Those were the days’ photo at the back of Hip Hop Connection; the hair, the clothes, the headbands! You know the stuff so it’s good to get this re-issue, especially as it comes with a Disc two of previously unreleased material.

While most on the new stuff is mainly instrumentals of less than 2 minutes in duration, there’s a Wldstyle ‘lesson’ by Kev Luckhurst that makes you wonder what is the point of latter day rapper superheroes? Hey, I’m not talking about the artists that are signed to say, Rawkus or Stones Throw, or appear on DJ Jazzy Jeff’s excellent compilation series Hip Hop Forever or even your favourite purveyors of Dirtybeatbreakinfunkandhiphop, Breakin’ Bread.

The Breakin’ Bread guys know how to party. So for their 9th Birthday bash at the Jazz Café, Wild Style originals, The Cold Crush Brothers will be joining Rob Life and Skeg for a b-boy battle (see details below).

While Rob and Skeg keep the true spirit of hip hop alive, this CD is the real thing, they may not have known what a legacy they were breeding but if it wasn’t for these guys, who knows what paths De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Beck, DJ Shadow, Public Enemy or even Madonna and Blondie would have taken?

This is the raw shit! Classic in the truest sense.
